What is Instagram?

Demystifying the social media world for small business owners.

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service. It enables users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr.

Originally, photos were confined to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images. In August 2015, version 7.5 was released, allowing users to post photos captured in any aspect ratio.

Instagram’s users are divided equally with 50% iPhone owners and 50% Android owners. While Instagram has a neutral gender-bias format, 68% of Instagram users are female while 32% are male. Instagram reaches a younger, more diverse audience than other social networks.

Many celebrities have profiles on Instagram, sharing photos and videos of their personal and professional lives with fans.

Users can upload photographs and short videos, follow other users’ feeds and “geotag” images with longitude and latitude coordinates, or the name of a location.

Every year, Instagram releases the “Top 10 Instagram geotagged locations in the world in pictures”. > See the Top 10 for 2014

Users can also apply digital filters to their images from a range supplied by Instagram which are easy to apply.

Instagram is distributed through the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Windows Phone Store.

The service was acquired by Facebook in April 2012 for approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock.
